Shelby Co ARES Net Preamble

[Note: Red text enclosed in [Brackets] is Instructional and is not intended to be read 'over the air'.]

Calling ALL Amateur Radio operators - Calling ALL Amateur Radio operators - The Shelby County Amateur Radio Emergency Service Net is now being Activated for our weekly Training Session. This is an open net serving all Amateur Radio Operators within range of this repeater. All properly licensed stations are welcome to join this Training Session of The Shelby County ARES Net. The Shelby County ARES Net is a service of the Shelby County Amateur Radio Club. Weekly training sessions are conducted on Tuesday evenings at 8:00pm local time on the W4SHL repeater operating at 146-point-980 MHz. In the event of repeater failure, the 145-point-290 MHz repeater will be used as the Net frequency. I need Two stations to go Off Frequency and verify the operational status of the 145.290 MHz repeater. Please call [Call Sign] Now.

In this Training Session we will learn correct On-the-Air procedures. We will use this Forum to learn how to correctly relay needed information and to better develop our skills as communicators. When this net is called into service, we will have greater confidence in our skills and know that we can present ourselves Professionally as Amateur Radio Operators. This net operates within the guidelines of the Amateur Radio Emergency Service. This net is affiliated with the National Traffic System and may be used as a vehicle for routing NTS Messages.

When your county is called, please give your call sign phonetically using ITU Standard Phonetics.

The Shelby County Amateur Radio Club holds meetings on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month at 7:00pm. Meetings are held at the Shelby County American Red Cross office on Valleydale Road. Please see the W4SHL dot COM website for complete details. Talk-in is on the 146-point-980 MHz repeater. Meetings are open to anyone interested.

  • The Birmingham Amateur Radio Club D-STAR Net meets at 8:30pm tonight on the Birmingham Amateur Radio Club's 145-point-410 MHz D-STAR repeater.
  • The Jefferson County Emergency Net meets at 9:00pm tonight on the Birmingham Amateur Radio Club's 146-point-880 MHz repeater.
  • The Alabama Traffic Net Mike meets every night of the week at 6:30pm Central Time on 3.965 MHz (LSB).
  • The Alabama Emergency Net Mike, which is the Statewide ARES net meets every Sunday at 21:00 UTC on 3.965 MHz (LSB). That is 4pm Central Daylight Time (during summer), and 3pm Central Standard Time (during winter).

How to Handle NTS Traffic
If you receive NTS traffic to relay and are unable to find a station on frequency to accept it, hold the traffic and list it again on the Jefferson County Emergency Net, 146.880 MHz, Tuesdays at 9:00 PM Local time. NTS traffic may also be listed with other daily nets. For more information on Traffic Handling, see FSD-218 on the ARRL Web.

Your input and your participation make these Training Sessions of the Shelby County ARES Net happen. This is our Forum for exchanging information with one another. In our Training Sessions we will strive to learn correct On-the-Air procedures. We will learn to send, receive and deliver NTS traffic. We will use this Forum to better develope our communications skills. Printing Tips For Websites with Frames & Iframes:
First select the frame you want to print by clicking your pointer in it, then choose FILE > PRINT > in the Print Frames area choose "Only the Selected Frame" and Print. Note to MS IE7 users: the Print Frames choices are on the OPTIONS Tab. Iframes are tricker to Print.
